REPORT | BLACKPOOL 1-1 BURTON ALBION

16 March 2021

HAYDEN Carter's first-half goal was cancelled out by a Luke Garbutt equaliser in the second as Burton Albion and Blackpool played out a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield Road.

There was just one change from the side that beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0 at the weekend in this third away game on the spin.

Danny Rowe was recalled to the starting XI as Terry Taylor dropped to the bench, but Rowe's evening was brought to an early end as he limped off injured, replaced by Joe Powell in the 14th minute.

Albion had threatened as early as the second minute when Kane Hemmings, fresh off a hat-trick against Crewe, found space in the box but drilled a shot against the stanchion, before the flag was raised against him moments later.

Hemmings was definitely onside on 17 minutes when Lucas Akins flicked on Ben Garratt's long kick, and the Albion striker drove an effort at goal from a tight angle but Chris Maxwell beat the ball away and the hosts were able to clear their lines.

The Brewers were coming forward well and winning plenty of corners and long throws, and caused plenty of problems with the latter. One such chance fell to Carter on 18 minutes as Akins flicked a delivery on, it was nodded straight to an unmarked Carter by Hemmings but, in trying to place his header into the corner, the Blackburn defender put it wide of the near post.

Four minutes later and a second phase from a Hamer throw-in came to Hemmings via Sean Clare - Hemmings was in behind and onside, but the ball was at an awkward height and he could not get the right amount of power on his shot, hitting the target but Maxwell saving comfortably.

Jonny Smith curled an effort at goal from 20 yards in the 23rd minute, with Maxwell doing well to parry behind, and from the resulting corner Albion took the lead.

The initial corner was worked well to Powell on the near side, and he swung a perfect delivery into the box, to the edge of the six-yard box, where CARTER was waiting to power a header, this time, past Maxwell and for a deserved lead for Albion.

Hamer would loop a header over the crossbar from a corner just past the half-hour as Albion looked to increase their lead, but Carter's header would be the difference at the break.

HALF-TIME: BLACKPOOL 0-1 BURTON ALBION

Blackpool came out much stronger in the second half and Demetri Mitchell had the first shot in anger of this 45, pulling a left-footed shot wide of the far post, but Albion were also threatening and another throw from Hamer was nearly headed into his own net by Dan Ballard but ended up narrowly over the crossbar.

And from the resulting corner, captain John Brayford got the first header but saw his effort deflect narrowly wide of the far post.

Hemmings steamed in at the back post on the hour, trying to get onto another Hamer throw, but Garbutt got a vital head to the ball to put it behind and deny Albion a certain second.

Blackpool started bringing the ball forward well from there, with Albion stretched, and duly equalised on 64 minutes.

The hosts charged down a clearance and the ball was worked to GARBUTT on the left side of the box, with the left-back drilling a fine finish across Garratt and into the far corner.

That lifted the hosts, who sensed an opportunity to take the lead, with Sullay Kaikai drilling one wide from 20 yards, before Jerry Yates showed neat feet in the box to create space for a shot on the corner of the six-yard box, but hit the side-netting.

Garratt had had little to do throughout the game but showed surety in denying Ballard with his feet from close range with 15 minutes to play.

From there, Albion began to come back into the game and Powell chested down one good forward ball but his right-footed shot was parried by Maxwell, and despite a few good crosses into the box and a late penalty shout as Powell went down, Albion were unable to retake the lead.

So the match ended with Albion's six-game winning run coming to an end, but the Brewers claiming a solid point on the road ahead of three straight home games coming up.
