MANAGER'S VERDICT | CAMBRIDGE UNITED (A)

27 August 2022

MANAGER Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had mixed feelings about Burton Albion's performance as Cambridge United ran out 4-3 winners at Abbey Stadium this afternoon.

The Brewers got off to the perfect start as Gassan Ahadme put us in front after just 11 seconds with a neat header - before Albion's momentum was halted by a red card for Jonny Smith for an off-the-ball incident.

Albion would take the lead twice further through John Brayford and Ahadme again, but a hat-trick for Sam Smith and one for Luke O'Neil ensured the hosts would overturn the deficit to take three points.

It was a cruel blow to the Brewers, who upped their performance following last week's defeat at Port Vale, but still saw their efforts count for naught.

"I think over the whole game (in terms of) going forward, commitment, fighting spirit - all of those things were second to none," said Hasselbaink.

"You've seen players who really care. But we are getting punished with every little mistake, and they are costing us.

"The first goal should easily be defended, the second and third as well. Their fourth is someone running off our man - normally he shoots and it goes outside the goal, but at the moment we don't get that grace.

"I've got mixed feelings. I'm very proud of the players and how they showed fighting spirit, how they scored three goals, but I'm not proud of our defending as a unit.

"We can't keep conceding four goals."

Hasselbaink said he had no complaints with the red card for Smith, which put the Brewers on the backfoot early on.

"I haven't seen (the incident), but I know he has done something because after the game he came to the team and apologised," said Hasselbaink.

"You can't do that - it puts us on the back foot when we've got momentum. We're feeling good, going forward and that happens.

"But even with 10 men, I don't expect us to concede four goals - even though at times it didn't look like we were playing with 10 men."
