HASSELBAINK SET TO PLAY STRONG TEAM AS HE TARGETS CUP PROGRESS

29 August 2022

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink will play his strongest team in the Papa John’s Trophy tomorrow night (7pm kick off).

The Brewers play Leicester Under 21s in the opening match of the group stages in a competition where the club has a poor record since becoming a Football League side.

It has been seen sometimes as an opportunity to give fringe players a game and to try out new formations but Hasselbaink is going to resist the temptation to make sweeping changes as he looks to make progress in a competition that ends in a Wembley Final.

Rotherham won the trophy last season beating Sutton United in front of more than 30,000 fans.

The competition is also an important income stream for lower league clubs with the winners banking up to £260,000.

Hasselbaink said: "It’s very important for us to try and get a win and we will put our strongest team out there, look to score some goals and get some confidence in defending.

“It’s not a time to look at other things.

“The competition is important for us, for the club. In the past we have let a few youngsters play but we aren’t going to do that. We want to win and go as far as possible with the cup.”

The Brewers two other group games are away at Sheffield Wednesday on September 20 and home to Bradford City on October 18.
