ACADEMY COACH REACTION | BURTON ALBION 3-0 HARTLEPOOL UNITED

7 December 2022

BURTON Albion's Professional Development Phase side dispatched Hartlepool United 3-0 at St George’s Park - and Lead Coach Keith Gilroy was impressed with the quality on display.

Albion deservedly ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a hattrick of goals from Dylan Scott and Lead Coach Keith Gilroy was impressed with the performance but still believes there’s room for improvement.

He said: “I thought we started the game really well.

“We only conceded one silly chance and that came from us trying to play out from the back which will happen at times, but in general we started the first half well and created a lot of chances.

“I thought we controlled the game quite comfortably when we had that element of patience to keep the ball deeper and move it quickly once it got to the attacking third of the pitch.

“But I felt we started the second half really sloppy.

“We just got a bit trapped as we moved the ball too slowly and we didn’t keep the same structure in possession that we did first half.”

Gilroy recognised that not all victories are going to be perfect but expressed there was an important message for the squad to take away for their future endeavours.

He stated: “The outcome of scoring three goals and getting a clean sheet should give the players confidence as at the moment it’s all about development.

“But at their next stages results become really important so sometimes you’ve got to go through some bad moments in games.”

Finally, the Lead Coach expressed his delight over the squad’s reaction to their disappointing performance against Bradford City last time out. Gilroy said: “I felt last week when we looked back at the Bradford game on video with the lads, we saw that despite them being a very good team we lacked a bit of courage and fearlessness to want the ball when we’re playing out from the back.

“However, that is something we’ve been very good at this season so today we played three at the back which gives us more of an overload to break their press and once we did that, we started to have a bit more possession and keep the ball a lot better really.”
