MANAGER'S VERDICT: LINCOLN CITY

26 December 2022

DINO Maamria praised an "excellent" performance from his team that earned an important three points with a 3-0 Boxing Day win over Lincoln City.

Albion scored three times in the first half an hour to take full control of the game and never gave the visitors an opportunity to get back into the match after the break.

It was the clean sheet as much as anything that delighted the manager.

He said: “Conceding goals has been a big problem for us all season. We have conceded way, way too many goals for our liking. If we are going to have any chance of winning football matches, we need to keep clean sheets. Not just the goalkeeper and the back four or five but as a team we need to make the right decisions and not be too open in transition.

“Our home performances have been generally good if you look at all the games we have played. Today, we tweaked the system slightly to give us chance to keep a clean sheet because we know we have goals as a team and we showed that again today, but we need to stop goals going in our net.

“The players have applied themselves and we have used the last nine days after Barnsley really well. You see how organised we were today, and we looked fitter and stronger. We had more energy, and this result was long overdue.

“The players try every day, and it was great to see a back five that squeezed and pressed, a front three who pressed the ball and a midfield that played the right ball at the right time. Our goalkeeper was good as well.

“We scored three good goals and could have scored more. Our start to the game was fantastic and exactly how I planned it. The players take great credit in how they applied themselves.

“Yesterday, I gave them the day off and we did some work from home, and they came in ready to put in a performance for our fans and for ourselves as well.”
