MANAGER'S VERDICT: MK DONS

25 January 2022

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink was disappointed that his team allowed MK Dons to play their game as the Brewers suffered a first defeat of 2022.

A stoppage time goal from Scott Twine sealed the points but Albion had chances, despite conceding a lot of possession to the visitors.

The Albion manager said: “They bossed it with the ball but if you look at the overall number of chances, we had three and they had two. The goal they scored I’m not really seeing as a chance, it’s just brilliant from their player, punishing us when we needed to clear the ball.

“We know they are good with the ball, and we didn’t show the energy we needed to show against them. When you play MK, you need to stop them starting and we got too far off them and then they can pick you off.

“They played well, but we made them look good. I fancied us today and I was looking forward to it, but we didn’t do the job. Maybe we should have changed shape, but we had been really good the way we had been playing so we didn’t want to change too much.

“Overall, they were good and we came second especially in the first half.”

The Brewers did manage to get Louis Moult involved, coming on as late substitute.

Hasselbaink said: “He had Covid last week, he just got back, and it was good to see him in the game and hopefully he can get stronger, and give us another option.”

The Brewers were without Jonny Smith tonight due to a sore hamstring and Ryan Leak suffered a head injury in training that kept him out.

But Hasselbaink confirmed that a head injury tonight for Sam Hughes was not likely to sideline the defender going forward.
