MANAGER'S VERDICT: SHEFFIELD UNITED

22 July 2022

JIMMY Floyd Hasselbaink thought his team was “sloppy” as they conceded three goals against Sheffield United.

The Brewers manager said: “There were too many missed passes, too many second balls we didn’t win. There were turnovers after turnovers and when that happens it’s a big problem. We missed our centre halves and we were a bit off.”

The missing defenders were Sam Hughes and Conor Shaughnessy who are both struggling to be fit for the first League One game of the season at Wycombe on July 30.

Hasselbaink said: “Conor has a bigger chance than Sam. It’s not ideal as you want then to play in the last match and get 90 minutes under their belts but it was not to be.

“We have only these two muscle injuries. Impact injuries you can’t do much about. That is the game but I’m happy overall apart from losing those two players in training."

Two of the goals tonight were scored by Daniel Jebbison, who made a big impression while on loan at the Pirelli Stadium last season.

Hasselbaink said: “We know what Jebbo can do and in two moments we didn’t get it right at all.”

At the other end of the pitch, the Brewers struggled to find the net and Hasselbaink says the lack of goals is a concern.

“Of course, it is, from all areas. That needs to improve, and we need to bring in a few more additions. In those area we have to be patient and a little bit lucky. Hopefully people see what we have done for Jebbison and will trust us with their big assets. It will have to be a favour from somebody but let’s see ….

“But we need a few more and some will need to go out, which is always the case.”
