CONOR Shaughnessy and Sam Hughes are the two injury doubts for the Brewers ahead of the opening fixture of the League One season away at Wycombe on Saturday.

The Brewers start the season against the team who secured a play off berth at the Pirelli Stadium on the last day of last season and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink expects them to be amongst the front runners again.

“They have momentum from last season, and you have to battle and be ready to do battle when you go there. You have to win that battle first and then settle the game down.

“They pass the ball a little bit more from back to front from what I have seen in pre-season.

“In terms of the squad, it is in good shape and Conor and Sam are getting better. One we think will make it; the other will be touch and go. We will see tomorrow and make a decision and see if it’s too risky.”

It’s an early start to what is a very long season, but Hasselbaink is ready for the challenge.

He said: “You have to be excited. You have to look ahead, and you have to be confident. There is still behind the scenes a bit of work to be done but to start with we have to be ready for Saturday. We need to compete, put a really good performance down but in the background keep working on bringing a few in who can make us better, stronger, quicker and more competitive.

“No team yet in this league is going to be 100 per cent fit. We just hope we are a little bit further than they are in our preparations and can take the three points.”

Hasselbaink’s hopes for this season are to kick on from the platform established in 2021/22.

“I don’t get carried way with losing or winning but always see the bigger picture. Last year was always about maintaining our League One status and getting that platform. That platform is there now and we need to build from that, learn from our mistakes and be better than last year.

“We want to play more football that pleases the eye but that doesn't mean we have to be open and naive. We have to get the balance right. It’s not easy to do that but we are trying to be a bit more energetic, powerful and with a little bit more speed in the team and have people who can help us pass from back to front. That won’t happen overnight but while we are working on that we still need to find ways of getting three points – and as many as possible.”
