TONY'S TRIVIA - BREWERS V NEEDHAM MARKET

4 November 2022

BURTON Albion statistician Tony Bentley with all the facts ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup First Round tie at home to Needham Market.

This is the first time Dino Maamria has managed an FA Cup tie for Burton Albion. However, he was manager of Oldham Athletic when they faced the Brewers in the FA Cup Second Round in 2019. The tie at Boundary Park saw Albion win 1-0 courtesy of a Liam Boyce first half goal. Current Brewers players Tom Hamer and Johnny Smith were in the Latics side that day.

Since they became a Football League side in 2009, Dino is the 7th manager to lead the Brewers in a First Round FA Cup tie.

Gary Rowett has managed the club in the most FA Cup ties as a Football League club. He oversaw 8 matches, Paul Peschisolido and Nigel Clough 7, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 3, Mike Whitlow and Jake Buxton 1.

Mike Whitlow was caretaker manager of Albion for the First Round tie at Barnsley in 2014. Current Albion striker Sam Winnall scored a hat-trick for the Tykes in a 5-0 win. Former Burton players Kane Hemmings and Devante Cole were Barnsley substitutes that day.

Burton Albion last played on the  November 5 in 2016 when they drew 0-0 at home to Barnsley in a Championship game in front of 4,913 fans. Sam Winnall was again in the Barnsley starting eleven.

Albion last faced non-league opponents in the FA Cup in 2020 when they lost 1-0 away to Barnet.

The Brewers last beat non-League opposition in the FA Cup back in 2014 when they beat Conference side Hereford United 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium. Adam McGurk and Matty Palmer were the goal scorers.

Needham Market are playing in the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. This match is the Brewers 30th First Round tie.

Recent defensive signing Adrian Mariappa, has never played in the FA Cup competition at the First Round stage. Given that he has only previously played in the Championship or the Premier League, the earliest he’d ever entered the competition was at the Third Round stage.

Mariappa did however face Conference side Dover Athletic in 14/15 when Crystal Palace won 4-0 at The Crabble.

Mariappa has also played in a FA Cup Final for Watford in 2019. He won’t want to be reminded of the score though, as Manchester City triumphed 6-0 at Wembley.

Bobby Kamwa has never played in the FA Cup.
