TONY Bentley with some facts and stats ahead of Sunday's FA Cup Second Round tie with Chippenham.
On This Day – November 27
On this date in 2021 the Brewers beat Doncaster Rovers in League One at the Pirelli Stadium. A crowd of 2,954 saw goals from Tom O’Connor and Daniel Jebbison defeat a Rovers side that included new Brewers signing Joe Dodoo.
In 2016 it was a 1-2 home defeat to Charlton Athletic in League One. Lucas Akins gave Albion the lead from the penalty spot, before Lee Bowyer’s side scored twice in front of 2,438 fans.
It was an FA Cup Second Round tie on this date in 2010, when a crowd of 3,881 saw the Brewers defeat league leaders Chesterfield 3-1 here at the Pirelli. The match itself was in grave doubt after heavy overnight snow fell on the pitch. Fortunately, the snow had been forecast and the pitch had been covered. A call for volunteers to remove the snow on the morning of the game was answered by local fans and the Brewers Academy players who toiled valiantly. Match referee Mark Brown was more than satisfied with the efforts and the game was given the go ahead following a noon inspection. Goals from Aaron Webster, Jacques Maghoma and James Collins saw Burton reach the Third Round for the first time as a Football League club.
Burton Albion had Nationwide Conference games against Exeter City on this date in both 2004 and 2006. In 2004 a crowd of 1,543 saw Jon Shaw score the only goal in the 42nd minute to earn all 3 points. It was the same score 2 years later when Andy Corbett’s 29th minute goal sent the majority of the 1,819 crowd home happy.
In 2002 the Brewers had an FA Cup First Round replay at Eton Park in front of the Sky TV cameras. Burton had drawn 2-2 at Oldham Athletic in the original tie to earn the rematch. In front of 3,416 fans Oldham went ahead in the 50th minute through Clyde Wijnhard before Christian Moore headed home the equaliser with just six minutes remaining. Moore then put his side ahead in extra time before David Eyres equalised or the League One side. A penalty shoot out resulted, with Albion suffering heartbreak losing out 5-4.
