MANAGER'S VERDICT: CHIPPENHAM

27 November 2022

DINO Maamria was delighted with the team performance that has earned Burton Albion a place in the FA Cup Third Round.

The Brewers were on the front foot from the kick off and never looked back once Jonny Smith opened the scoring on 26 minutes and eventually ran out 6-1 winners.

The Albion manager said: “Our start to the game was important. Our preparation all week has been excellent. We know they beat Lincoln in the round before and I went to watch them and we did our homework on every player. We shared that with the team and I thought our players, especially our experienced players did very well.

“Deji Oshilaja was outstanding, he was the driving force, not just because of his goals but his attitude in the dressing room, in training all week. When you have those kind of players in your camp, you know you are in a good place.

“We learned from Needham Market, and we knew we had to surpass their energy and have a good start. We knew they would defend deep and play with a  back five and we knew how we could cause them problems. Jonny and Deji were very good at doing that in the first half.

“They are a good team and showed that in glimpses in the second half and caused us one or two problems so credit should go to them as well.”

The Brewers were without Sam Hughes who suffered a thigh strain in the midweek win over Tranmere but welcomed back skipper John Bayford and Corrie Ndaba as a second half sub.

Maamria said: “Corrie came on and gave us some composure. He trained this week and I was close to starting him after we lost Sam Hughes. It’s good to get him and John Brayford back in the team. “

Thoughts now turn to the Third Round draw which takes place on Monday at 7pm.

Maamria said: “Deji wants Chelsea away; Jonny wants Liverpool away; Victor wants Manchester United away; my little boy wants Man City at the Etihad as he wants to meet Pep and me, I want a Championship team at home and beat them and get into the Fourth Round.”
