BURTON ALBION SIGN ADRIAN MARIAPPA ON SHORT-TERM DEAL

7 October 2022

BURTON Albion Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of experienced defender Adrian Mariappa on a short-term contract, subject to international clearance.

The Jamaican international, who has amassed 64 caps for the Reggae Boyz, adds plenty of Premier League and Championship experience to the Brewers backline.

Mariappa began his career with Watford, joining the Hornets at the age of eight and going on to make more than 300 appearances for the Hornets over two spells, winning promotion to the Premier League in 2006

After leaving Watford in 2012, Mariappa spent a season with Reading in the top-flight before moving to Crystal Palace, with whom he reached the FA Cup final in 2015.

The 36-year-old returned to Vicarage Road in 2016, spending three-and-a-half seasons in the Premier League with the Hornets before joining Bristol City in 2020.

In December of last year, Mariappa moved abroad - making 19 appearances for Macarthur FC in the Australian A-League and being named in the A-League All Stars squad that took on Barcelona in a friendly last May.

Mariappa has been training with the Brewers but his eligibility for tomorrow's game at Peterborough United depends on international clearance being received in time.

"He brings a lot of very, very good experience, he's a good talker on the field and he adds another option for us," said Maamria.

"He's kept himself fit - his last game was just two weeks ago for Jamaica against Argentina. He had a good season in Australia last year, so he's been at a high standard.

"We're looking forward to seeing what he can bring."

Mariappa is looking forward to getting started at the Pirelli Stadium.

"I want to thank the manager and the chairman for the opportunity to represent the club.

"I'm delighted to be here with a brilliant group of lads.

"I'm looking forward to getting started and to helping the team push up the table."
