BURTON Albion rallied to level the scores in the second half against Solihull Sporting on Sunday - but a harsh penalty and two late goals secured a 5-2 win for the hosts.

The Brewers dominated the opening stages of the game, playing some nice possession football around the back but struggling to break through to the final third.

It was the home side who took their first chance of the game to break the deadlock however, when after 20 minutes Solihull countered down the left wing and took the advantage with a low shot from the edge of the area.

The home side doubled their lead on the half hour mark, as Alice Langstone was just beaten to the ball by the onrushing attacker who managed to just lift the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Despite going in at the break two behind, the game became all to play for in the second half when Hajrah MAHMOOD whipped a menacing freekick into the bottom corner to pull one back for the Brewers just five minutes into the second half.

The momentum stayed with the away side, who were able to equalise shortly after Mahmood’s first, this time through winger Millie DRINKHALL. The Brewers looked well and truly in the driving seat with half an hour left as they chased an elusive winning goal.

A penalty in the 80th minute turned the game on its head however as Sporting were awarded a spot kick after Sophie Richards was adjudged to have committed a foul on the edge of the box despite looking to have won the ball.

The penalty was calmly converted by the Sporting number 9 who grabbed her first of three in the game and the home side’s third.

The Brewers were forced to push for an equaliser in the dying minutes and were unlucky to concede two late goals after committing players forward searching for a last gasp goal.

The game ended 5-2 with the Brewers unlucky to lose late on due to some difficult decisions, but there was positives to take out of the game after the side showed great resilience to fight back from two behind in the second half.
