VICTOR Adeboyejo capped a battling Brewers performance with his ninth goal of the season as Albion ground out a precious one-nil win over Cheltenham Town.

In a game of few real chances the Brewers leading scorer always looked the biggest threat for Albion and was eventually the man to secure a big three points, darting to the near post to finish a cross from Jonny Smith after Albion had earlier been frustrated with Davis Keillor-Dunn saw a first half penalty saved.

After the confidence lift given by Tuesday's Papa John's Trophy win over Bradford City, Albion were looking to make it four games unbeaten and a third in the league after draws with Peterborough and Morecambe. The team that took to the field showed two changes to that which had to settle for a point against the Shrimps last weekend. With Sam Winnall missing after coming off last time out there was a recall for Everton loanee Tyler Onyango who put it an energetic and impressive performance against the Bantams in midweek. Joe Powell, who opened the scoring in Tuesday's 4-0 win also returned to the starting eleven in the league as Jonny Smith dropped to the bench.

Both sides tried to impose themselves on the game in the opening exchanges in something of a midfield exchange and there was little in the way of a serious threat from either side. Taylor Perry sent a free kick from a promising central position well over the bar for the visitors and when space opened up for Powell he fired a low shot wide of the target from 25 yards.

Albion really should have opened the scoring on twelve minutes when a free kick out wide on the left was swung into the box by Powell and Mariappa rose unmarked to get his head to it but was unable to keep his effort down from relatively close range.

A clash of heads between Adeboyejo and Robins skipper Sean Long on eighteen minutes led to a break in play as both players needed attention from the respective medical teams.

Adeboyejo showed no signs of any after effects when he got himself onto the end of a searching pass from Sam Hughes on 27 minutes but on the turn with the angle against him his rising shot failed to trouble Luke Southwood in the Robins' goal.

Long's injury seemed to take more of an effect and after a challenge on the edge of the penalty area he was withdrawn just after the half hour mark to be replaced by Ben Williams.

Albion's patient passing game was rewarded with a penalty on 44 minutes when Keillor-Dunn was felled by ex-Brewer Ryan Broom as he looked to shoot but Southwood got down well to his left to beat away the spot kick.

Powell had another chance to give Albion the lead going into the break but his low drive was deflected just wide for a corner.

Half time: Burton Albion 0-0 Cheltenham Town

Keillor-Dunn quickly had a chance as the first half started to make amends for his missed penalty when a deep cross was deflected into his path but his shot was straight into the arms of Southwood.

Albion changed things up midway through the second half as the game continued to be more of a battle. Bobby Kamwa and Smith added fresh legs as Onyango and Powell both made way.

Adeboyejo suddenly found space open up in front of him immediately as play restarted but tempted to shoot from distance his rising effort was never troubling Southwood.

Albion's leading scorer continued to look the biggest chance of a goal and after good link up with Keillor-Dunn on the right he found space for an angle shot that drifted wide of the far post as the game entered the final quarter of an hour.

And the goal came eventually as ADEBOYEJO made a dart to the near post to get his foot to a low cross from Smith and divert it beyond Southwood.

Calum Butcher was sent on late on to shore things up in midfield but it was Smith who almost sealed it with a stinging rising drive in stoppage time when Oshilaja led a break away.

Victory pulled Albion to within  just one place and two points of their visitors ahead of a crucial week on the road and the relief amongst players and supporters at the final whistle was palpable.
