MATCH REPORT | SHIFNAL TOWN DEVELOPMENT 1-2 BURTON ALBION DEVELOPMENT

21 September 2022

BURTON Albion's Development Squad made it two wins from two in the Staffordshire Girls and Ladies League Premier Division after coming from behind to beat Shifnal Town 2-1.

Two quickfire goals in the second half from Millie Cokayne and Mia Fellows secured a superb comeback victory for Albion, who moved second in the table as a result.

Both sides conducted an impeccable minute's silence ahead of kick-off in tribute to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

A scrappy opening 10 minutes saw little in the way of chances, with both sides looking slightly nervy and struggling to retain possession, but gradually Albion were able to see more of the ball and impose themselves on the game.

Fellows, Cokayne and Clara Norcross all went close with good efforts before, slightly against the run of play, the Brewers found themselves a goal down on the half-hour mark - a mix-up in the defence presenting a chance for Freya HORLER to break away and go one-on-one with Layla Fountain, the forward finishing well.

Albion did not let their heads drop - a new centre-half partnership of Chloe Matthews and Jade Cooling looking largely assured and resilient, and growing into the game well.

The second half began much as the first ended and a period of constant pressure immediately after the restart saw Albion take a well-deserved and well-worked equaliser on 52 minutes.

The ball broke to COKAYNE on the left-side of the 18-yard box, with the Brewers midfielder showing fantastic skill and awareness to chip the Shifnall goalkeeper.

And just five minutes later the Brewers led. FELLOWS was played in behind the Shifnal defensive line and tapped the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1.

The Brewers continued to provide a threat in search of a third goal to kill the game off - Norcross in particular causing all manner of problems on the right wing - but Albion had to remain resilient in the final 10 as Shifnal caused problems of their own, forcing Fountain into one important save late on to keep the three points intact.

Well played to Shifnal Town Development, and thank you for hosting us at the weekend. The Brewers are back in action at Shobnall this weekend against Rushall Olympic Ladies on Sunday, September 25 (3pm kick-off).

WOMAN OF THE MATCH: Clara Norcross - looked a real threat down the right wing
