MAAMRIA SET TO LOSE GILLIGAN FOR UP TO 4 WEEKS

22 September 2022

Dino Maamria has confirmed that midfielder Ciaran Gilligan will be out for up to four weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Academy graduate returned to the Brewers starting XI for the games against Portsmouth and Exeter but was taken off on the hour mark against the Grecians.

Maamria said: “Gilligan is out. It’s a blow for us. He came in and he’s done fantastic for a game and a half and then he felt his hamstring at Exeter.

"We’re looking at (about) four weeks. We’ll work with him and try to get him in a better shape than ever before and he will come back stronger for it, no doubt.”

Albion are already without goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo ahead of Saturday's trip to Shrewsbury Town after the on-loan goalkeeper was called up for international duty by the Finland senior squad.

Maamria will now have a wait to check on the fitness of Deji, Oshilaja, Calum Butcher and Mustapha Carayol ahead of the weekend.

“Deji had a little bit of a tight hamstring on Tuesday, so we'll need to check on that. Butcher has had a groin injury, but hopefully he’ll be fine. Mustapaha also missed Tuesday night's game with a slight strain, but hopefully he will be ok as well."

Jonny Smith who is set to return to league action for the first time following suspension, having playing sixty-minutes and getting a goal on Tuesday night in the Papa Johns Trophy against Sheffield Wednesday.

Dino expressed his faith and delight at having the winger back in the squad, who he'd previously worked with at former club Oldham Athletic.

“Jonny Smith is a big asset for us. He had a tough probably 7-8 months. We’ll get him back to his best. When he first signed, he was unplayable and that’s what he’s capable of, and now my job is to get him back to his best.”

Ahead of Saturday’s game, Dino addressed the atmosphere around the club and was full of praise about the positive attitude of the squad.

“It’s exciting. The place is buzzing, the players have responded (well) every day.

"Of course, I have to pick the team, but we made five changes on Tuesday and the performance was to the same standard as at Exeter.

"That’s what we want - when we make one or two changes the performance levels need to stay the same. The squad have a good attitude to do that.”
