FACTS and figures related to tomorrow's game at Derby County from Tony Bentley.


The last time that Burton Albion played a Football League game on 22nd April was in 2019 when they travelled to relegation threatened Southend United in League One. The Essex side that day contained former Burton players Mark Oxley, Rob Kiernan and Michael Kightly. The Shrimpers took an 18th minute lead through Sam Mantom, before doubling their advantage through Harry Bunn in the 48th. John Brayford pulled a goal back on the hour mark, before Timothy Dieng restored the two-goal lead in the 77th minute. Marcus Harness pulled a goal back four minutes from time, but it wasn’t enough to deny Southend their first league win in 16 attempts.

It was a more pleasurable occasion in 2017 when Leeds United visited the Pirelli Stadium in the Championship. A crowd of 6,073 saw the game remain goalless until the final quarter of an hour. Marvin Sordell opened the scoring in the 75th minute, before Michael Kightly doubled Albion’s lead two minutes later. Leeds centre half Kyle Bartley pulled a goal back 10 minutes from time, but it was the Brewers who earned a vital three points in the battle to remain in the Championship.

It was a Blue Square Premier fixture on 22nd April 2008. The Brewers travelled to Aggborough to face Kidderminster Harriers in a match which current captain John Brayford played. Harriers took the lead in the 18th minute through Daryl Knights. Iyseden Christie doubled the lead three minutes later, before Knights made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute. Shaun Harrad reduced the deficit in the 79th minute, before Gavin Hurren made it 4-1 to Harriers in the 89th minute, to send the majority of the 1,761 fans home happy.

Forest Green Rovers were the opponents on this day in 2006 for a Nationwide Conference fixture. A crowd of 2,331 were in the Pirelli Stadium to see Shaun Harrad score the only goal of the game after 45 minutes.

Back in 2002 the Brewers played Barrow in the Unibond Premier League. A crowd of 1,001 were inside Eton Park to see Paul Talbot open the scoring with a 25-yard shot in the 22nd minute. Mark Blount headed home a Talbot corner in the 48th minute, before Talbot fired home his second goal on the hour mark. Christian Moore made it 4-0 in the 88th minute.


Saturday will be only the Brewers third ever visit to Pride Park, and their first one outside of the Championship.

The first meeting between the two sides at Pride Park was on Tuesday 21st February 2017. A crowd of 31,081 saw the two sides play out a goalless draw.

The last time Burton Albion played at Derby was on Saturday 2nd December 2017. The Rams had current Albion striker Sam Winnall in the squad, and he came on as a 73rd minute substitute. Whilst the Burton side had four former Rams players in their squad. Stephen Bywater, John Brayford and Jake Buxton all started the match, with Luke Varney coming on as an 84th minute substitute. Derby scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute when Johnny Russell fired home after Matty Palmer failed to clear a ball in the Burton penalty area.
