JOHN CLARKE WINS PRESTIGIOUS EFL AWARD

24 April 2023

BURTON Albion’s John Clarke was named as the Club Employee Award winner at last night's 2023 EFL Awards ceremony in London.

Also new for 2022/23, the EFL’s Club Employee Award looks to celebrate and recognise an outstanding Club or CCO employee, working either full time, part time or on a matchday.

John joined Burton Albion’s Academy in July 2022 as a voluntary member of staff, being appointed to a support role working closely with club staff and players and taking on a wide variety of responsibilities across all age groups, from assisting coaches at training to working in player care and life skills.

A lifelong Burton Albion fan who has had a season ticket for 12 years, John has had quadriplegic cerebral palsy his entire life, requiring the use of a wheelchair to get around and assistance from a carer for daily life tasks.

John has quickly become a popular and important member of club staff. Outside of football, John presents a radio show on Micro Brew Radio, a local community station, has competed in boxing matches and chronicles his life story across his social media pages.

Upon collecting his award, John said: “It means everything. Football is about the difference it can make to everybody. The work I do at the academy shows the difference that EFL Clubs can make.”

Burton Albion Chairman Ben Robinson said: "Everyone at the club is delighted that John has won this accolade. This is a well deserved award as John is an inspiration to everyone here at Burton Albion on a daily basis. It's also testament to the impact he makes which has been recognised by the EFL."

Academy Manager Dan Robinson said: "It was a fantastic evening and it was absolutely brilliant for John to be recognised for all the hard work he does for the club and the Academy in front of such star-studded audience on such a prestigious evening."
