28 April 2023

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow's game at Plymouth from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY - APRIL 29

The last time the Brewers played on April 29th was in 2017 when they travelled to Barnsley in the Championship. A crowd of 12,952 were inside Oakwell as Nigel Clough’s side were still looking to secure their survival in the division for a second season. George Moncur gave the home side the lead after 38 minutes. January signing Luke Varney was introduced in the 51st minute, and a minute later he scored his one and only league goal for Burton. However, it turned out to be the goal that earned a point from a 1-1 draw, that guaranteed survival.

In 2006 Albion travelled to Ebbsfleet for their final Nationwide Conference game of that season. Current captain John Brayford came on as a 77th minute substitute for Terry Henshaw. Kris Taylor scored the only goal of the game in the 36th minute to send the Burton fans in the 912 crowd home happy.

It was another long trip on this date in 2000 when it was a Southern League Premier division trip to Weymouth. A crowd of 901 saw goals from Nigel Clough and Christian Moore earn Burton a 2-1 win.

Burton Albion earned Cup success on this date in 1997. It was a trip to Sudbury Town for the 2nd leg of the Dr Martens League Cup Final. Burton had won the home leg three days earlier by a 3-0 scoreline, and completed a 4-0 aggregate win courtesy of a goal from Steve Spooner.

It was a trip to Sussex on this date in 1995. The Brewers faced Hastings Town in a Southern Premier League game in front of 402 fans. Darren Grocutt scored the only goal of the game to earn the points for Burton.

Burton were chasing promotion from League Two when they visited Home Park on April 3rd 2015. Liverpool loanee Kevin Stewart gave Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side a 33rd minute lead, with a goal on his debut. The points were shared though, as Carl McHugh equalised in the 86th minute to send the majority of the 8,649 fans home happier.
