TONY'S TRIVIA: BLACKPOOL

3 August 2023

FACTS and figures relating to our opening League One game of the season away at Blackpool.

This will be only the second time that Burton Albion have played a Football League game on 5th August. The only other occasion occurred in 2017 and was the opening game of Albion’s second season in the Championship. Former Burton boss Neil Warnock brought his Cardiff City side to the Pirelli Stadium. A crowd of 5,050 were present to see a close encounter that was ultimately settled by a fine Kenneth Zohore effort in the 87th minute. The lack of a goal for the Brewers was to be a sign of things to come that season, especially at home, where they failed to score in a further nine games.

Burton’s first ever visit to Bloomfield Road coincided with their only victory on the Lancashire Coast. It was Tuesday 18th August 2015 when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took his team for a League One encounter. The home side took the lead in the 26th minute when Henry Cameron broke down the right and pulled the ball back for Jack Redshaw to turn the ball past Jon McLaughlin. It took until the 58th minute for the Brewers to level when Nasser El Kahyati wove his way into the Blackpool area before curling a shot around the keeper. Then five minutes from time Charles Dunn clumsily bundled Stuart Beavon over 20 yards from goal. Up stepped Khayati to curl the ball around the wall and into the net off the underside of the crossbar to earn his side all three points, in front of 6,197 fans.

Albion next visited on Saturday November 24th 2018, this time under the management of Nigel Clough. The first half saw very few chances as both sides cancelled each other out. Whatever Nigel’s plans were for the second half went completely out the window as Armand Gnanduillet gave Blackpool the lead within a minute of the restart. Less than three minutes later Jordan Thompson doubled the lead, before former Burton loanee Joe Dodoo made it 3-0 in the 57th to inflict a heavy defeat.

The last visit came during the Covid hit 2020/21 season. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was in charge for the second time. The Brewers went into the game looking to secure an unbelievable seventh successive away win. Loanee defender Hayden Carter gave Burton a 24th minute lead, but despite being the better side they were only one goal ahead at the break. Blackpool were much improved in the second half and defender Luke Garbutt earned his side a share of the points when he equalised in the 64th minute.
