FACTS and figures relating to Saturday's home game against Derby County from Tony Bentley.

On This Day - August 12

On this date in 2014 the then Championship side Wigan Athletic visited the Pirelli Stadium in the First Round of the Capital One League Cup. Marc-Antoine Fortune gave Wigan a seventh minute lead, before Dominic Knowles pulled the Brewers level right on half time. Seven minutes into the second half Stuart Beavon scored what turned out to be the winning goal, to send Gary Rowett’s side into the second round.

The only time Burton have played a Football League game on 12th August was back in 2017 in the Championship. Nigel Clough took his side to Hull City where Abel Hernandez gave the home side a 7th minute lead. Undeterred Albion levelled matters in the 33rd minute through Jackson Irvine. However just 5 minutes later Irvine was dismissed for a second yellow card, leaving Albion a man short for the remainder of the game. Hull took full advantage retaking the lead through Kamil Grosicki in the 51st minute. Hernandez got his second just 3 minutes later, before grabbing his hat-trick and his sides fourth goal after 68 minutes to inflict a heavy defeat on the Brewers.

Derby County

The first ever league meeting between the two sides wasn’t until August 26th 2016 when a ground record crowd of 6,746 saw the two sides meet in the Championship in front of the Sky TV cameras. Current Brewers captain John Brayford made his Football League debut for the Brewers, against one of his former sides, eight years after leaving the Pirelli Stadium.  The only goal of the game came after just 12 minutes when Lucas Akins crossed from the right for Jackson Irvine to time his run to perfection before heading home. Former Rams favourite Sean Barker was an 89th minute substitute for Burton, marking a remarkable return to the Championship after a horrendous injury.

The second meeting came on Saturday 18th April 2018 when Gary Rowett brought his promotion chasing side to the Pirelli Stadium. Burton were staring down the barrel of relegation, having only won one game at Barnsley since New Year’s Day.  At home the record was even worse having not won there since they beat Fulham 2-1 on 16th September. The following 17 games saw only 4 points gained from 4 draws.  Liam Boyce opened the scoring after 24 minutes, before David Nugent equalised 5 minutes later. Luke Murphy restored the Brewers lead a minute before half time, before Lucas Akins made the game safe in the 68th minute.

The most recent home meeting between the two sides came on Saturday 10th December 2022 when Paul Warne brought his side to town, and the two sides played out a 1-1 draw. A crowd of 5,922 saw the Rams take the lead midway through the first half when James Collins headed home Conor Hourihane’s cross. The Brewers levelled proceedings in the 79th following a Terry Taylor corner. Eiran Cashin’s attempted headed clearance was headed back goalwards by Corrie Ndaba, allowing Victor Adeboyejo to divert the ball home from close range.
