MANAGER'S VERDICT: SHREWSBURY TOWN (A)

15 August 2023

BURTON Albion manager Dino Maamria said that conceding early was a huge factor in tonight's defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

The Brewers conceded after three minutes at Croud Meadow before doubling their lead on the stroke of half-time through Chey Dunkley. Mason Bennett pulled a goal back in the 97th minute but it wasn't enough to prevent defeat.

“Overall we conceded early on and again late in the half, but in-between the goals I thought we played pretty well and created a lot of chances.

“To go in at half time 2-0 down when they score from a corner with the last kick of the half was a kick in the teeth.

“I thought we responded pretty well overall in the second half, after we scored we pushed to get the equaliser but unfortunately that didn’t happen."

It was more injury worry for Maamria's men as Jamal Blackman and Josh Gordon picked up knocks during the match, following injuries to Jasper Moon, Cole Stockton, Josh Walker and Tom Hamer.

“When you have key players missing you concede goals and you don’t score goals, that’s the reality. We have a small squad but we’re confident that when we get one or two bodies back that we’ll be able to kick on.

“John Brayford was playing with an injury he picked up on Saturday and put his body on the line. Tom Hamer is still out injured, Jasper Moon is still out injured and these are key players for us.”
