PAINTING HONOURS BREWERS FIRST CHAIRMAN

16 August 2023

BEN Robinson has been presented with a special artwork from Stafford Prison.

The Burton Albion chairman recently held the office of High Sheriff of Staffordshire for a year and working with the prison service was part of his duties.

On a visit to Stafford Prison, he learned about some very talented artists and one of the prisoners was inspired to create the artwork which remembers W.O Burnell, who was instrumental in the foundation of Burton Albion at a public meeting at the Town Hall in 1950.

Councillor Burnell was the Mayor in 1950 and he was elected alongside eight others at that public meeting to be part of the caretaker committee that would bring Burton Albion to life.

Councillor Burnell famously said: “We have been accused in certain directions of biting off more than we can chew. I can assure you that whatever we have bitten off we will eat, never mind chew.”

Councillor Burnell would later join the board of directors and become Burton Albion’s first chairman.

Stafford Prison Governor Ian West encouraged the prisoner to undertake the work and presented it to Burton Albion at the recent Stoke City home game.

He said: “I explained that this was something that would be cherished by Burton Albion and the chairman and would help forge links between us and the football club. The prisoner was grateful to be given the opportunity and has used his talent to create this great work.”
