TONY'S TRIVIA: WYCOMBE

18 August 2023

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow's League One game at Wycombe from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY - AUGUST 19

The only previous time that Burton Albion have played on August 19th in the Football League was back in League Two in 2014. Exeter City were the visitors to the Pirelli Stadium as Gary Rowett’s side looked to make it three straight league wins to start the season. A crowd of 2,099 saw that achieved when Stuart Beavon scored the only goal of the game after 41 minutes, to open his league account for the Brewers.

It was back in the Blue Square Premier Division days of 2007 the time before that as the Brewers hosted Oxford United. Daryl Clare gave Albion an 11th minute lead, before former Burton loanee Gary Twigg equalised inside a minute.  It was the visitors who went on the score the winner in the 57th minute through Yemi Odubade to send the majority of the 2,259 crowd home disappointed.

WYCOMBE WANDERERS

Burton last made the trip to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday 30th July 2022. It was the earliest date that Albion had played a Football League game. It was to be a chastening experience for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side. David Wheeler was allowed to run unchecked into the area to poke home from close range after just seven minutes. Just nine minutes later it was Anis Mehmeti’s turn to advance unchallenged to score Wanderers second goal. The match result was done and dusted by the 30th minute, when Josh Scowen fired home a stunning half volley from the edge of the area for a very comfortable 3-0 win for Gareth Ainsworth’s side in front of 5,772 fans.

First half goals were the difference again when the two sides met at Adams Park on Tuesday 7th December 2021. Brandon Hanlon opened the scoring after 16 minutes after an unchecked run into the box. Gareth McCleary made it 2-0 right on half time, when a long clearance was headed onto him, and he fired past Ben Garratt. Burton did pull a goal back nine minutes into the second half, when Conor Shaughnessy fired home from 15 yards after Wycombe failed to deal with a Tom Hamer long throw.

It was first half goals again for Wycombe on 6th October 2018. This time the home side had to wait until the 30th minute when a clumsy Kyle McFadzean challenge on Craig Mackail-Smith resulted in a penalty. Joe Jacobsen converted the spot kick before Bayo Akinfenwa doubled the lead in the 37th minute. He powered home a header from Randall Williams cross. Albion got an early goal in the second half when Liam Boyce found Marvin Sordell with a neat pass, before Sordell rounded the keeper to score. However, it was the majority of the 4,002 fans who celebrated a 2-1 win for the home side.

You have to go back to the League Two winning season of 2014/15 to find the Brewers last win at Adams Park. It was Monday 17th November in front of the Sky TV Cameras for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first game in charge of Albion. Phil Edwards gave Burton a 38th minute lead when he powerfully headed home a Matt Palmer corner from six yards out. Palmer was again the provider in the 49th minute playing in Alex MacDonald to fire home first time to double the lead. Wycombe pulled a goal back in the 65th minute after Shane Cansdell-Sherrif conceded a penalty, which Paul Hayes converted. Burton restored their two-goal lead just three minutes later when Jacob Blyth headed home a left wing cross to complete a fine win in front of 3,981 fans.
