REACTION: GARY MILLS POST-BLACKPOOL

26 December 2023

GARY Mills praised the effort and commitment of his players after the Brewers earned a Boxing Day win with a gritty performance at the Pirelli Stadium.

A first half goal from Bobby Kamwa and a resolute defensive performance secured a 1-0 victory over Blackpool.

The Burton Albion caretaker manager said: “I’m really proud of the group; the energy and pride they showed in the performance. They deserved that.

“We hammered home a message before the game that we wanted to start fast, bright and full of energy. We wanted to engage the crowd and get them on side straight away and it was a really positive performance.”

The winner came after 10 minutes when Kamwa's cross evaded the on rushing Bez Lubala but still found it’s way into the net.

Mills said: “The delivery was fantastic and was always asking questions. Bobby was fantastic; he showed good energy and was a real threat. We were a decent side on the counterattack today.”

Having got the lead Albion never showed any signs of giving it up with Max Crocombe barely having a save to make in the Brewers goal thanks to the determination of the defence in front of him.

Mills said: “The defensive display was outstanding and that gave us a real platform to play off. They defended for their lives, and stuck together.”

That secured Albion’s first Sky Bet League One win since October 21.

Mills said: “The lads are starting to believe again. They are together and they are a happy group. We are just trying to get the environment right and give the lads freedom to play with their hearts, with a smile on their face and to enjoy playing for this fantastic football club.

“The fans have turned out in numbers and have been fantastic. Hopefully they will go away happy and were entertained. I want to say a big thank you to them as they were immense today."

Attention now turns to Friday night when the Brewers face Shrewsbury at the Pirelli Stadium with a 7.45pm kick off.
