TONY'S TRIVIA: BOLTON

31 December 2023

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s away game at Bolton from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY - JANUARY 1

This will be the ninth time that Burton Albion have played a Football League game on New Year’s Day.

The last occasion was last year on Sunday, January 1, 2023 for a chastening experience on the Lancashire coast at Morecambe. A crowd of 3,972 saw the home side inflict the heaviest defeat in Dino Maamria’s tenure as Burton manager with a 5-0 drubbing. A brace of goals from both Kieran Phillips and Caleb Watts, plus one from Jensen Weir did the damage.

It was a happier occasion the year before on Saturday, January 1, 2022. Crewe Alexandra were the visitors to the Pirelli Stadium that afternoon. Harry Chapman opened the scoring in the 6th minute, before Tom Lowery equalised for Crewe 13 minutes later. John Brayford restored the lead in the 25th minute, against one of his former clubs, before Kane Hemmings scored a spectacular effort in the 34th minute to make it 3-1 at half time. The only goal in the second half came in the 90th minute when Daniel Jebbison made it 4-1, to send the majority of the 3,119 fans home happy.

It was a trip to today’s opponents Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. The home side raced into an early 2-0 lead through Joe Dodoo and Daryl Murphy in the 5th and 11th minute respectively. David Templeton reduced the deficit firing home in the 13th minute, before Lucas Akins equalised in the 26th minute. Akins put the Brewers ahead for the first time on the stroke of half time from a narrow angle, before former Burton loanee Luke Murphy was sent off early in the second half after picking up a second booking. Liam Boyce scored a fourth in the 81st minute, before Dennis Politic ensured a tense finish with the final goal of the game in the 84th, to send the majority of the 11,918 fans home disappointed.

The Brewers travelled to Bristol Rovers on New Year’s Day 2019. A crowd of 9,060 saw Nigel Clough’s side pick up their first away clean sheet of the season, at the 12th attempt, in a 0-0 draw.

Monday, January 1, 2018 saw the Brewers earn their biggest Championship away win at Sheffield Wednesday. A crowd of 25,506 had already seen Lucas Akins miss a first half penalty, before Tom Flanagan surged forward to open the scoring in the 37th minute. Lloyd Dyer burst clear in the 50th minute to run on and make it 2-0, before Tom Naylor completed a fine 3-0 win when he turned the ball home in the 89th minute.

BOLTON WANDERERS

The last time that Albion visited Bolton Wanderers was on Tuesday, October 15, 2022. A crowd of 16,172 saw Sam Hughes head Burton into the lead in the 73rd minute, before Amadou Bakayoko equalised in the 87th minute. Albion were denied a point in the 8th minute of stoppage time when Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored the winner, to earn Bolton their first ever win over Albion.

The two sides met on Monday, September 6, 2021 for a televised encounter in front of 13,305. Burton were on the back foot for much of the game but earned a hard fought point from a 0-0 draw, despite John Brayford being sent off in the 86th minute for a second booking.

Saturday, December 16, 2017 saw the only meeting in Bolton in the Championship.  A crowd of 13,632 saw Lloyd Dyer score the only goal of the game in 23rd minute. A deep John Brayford free kick was headed clear by a defender to Dyer, who struck a 20-yard volley, which bounced past Ben Alnwick in the Trotters goal.
