BOBBY Kamwa provided the Christmas cheer as his goal secured an important 1-0 win over Blackpool.

The striker netted his first of the season after ten minutes providing a platform for Albion to show plenty of steel and determination to grab a first win under the caretaker management of Gary Mills.

Blackpool had long spells trying to grab an equaliser but Burton showed huge defensive resilience to seal the victory for the Boxing Day crowd.

After the thrilling end to the game at Charlton on Saturday it was a case of two attacking changes for Albion in search of more points in League One. Both Mason Bennett and Mustapha Carayol dropped to the bench as Bobby Kamwa and Kwadwo Baah were recalled.

Albion looked to build on that positivity with a fast start and an early free kick saw Powell pick out the head of Ryan Sweeney eight yards out but his header dropped the wrong side of the post.

It did not take long for Albion to strike though as KAMWA got a stroke of his fortune when his cross from the left just evaded Bez Lubala in the middle but did enough to go all the way through and into the far corner. The goal, though, owed much to a superb first touch from the striker having taken down a long punt out from Max Crocombe on his chest to beat his man.

Blackpool quickly looked for an equaliser and a more than presentable chance fell to the feet of leading scorer Jordan Rhodes on 17 minutes but with Jake Caprice throwing himself in to block the striker cleared the crossbar with his effort.

It was proving to be an entertaining encounter and Blackpool threatened again from Karamoko Dembele’s free kick before Lubala saw a chance open up against his former side with Callum Connolly getting in the crucial block.

The visitors looked threatening when they could get the ball out to winger CJ Hamilton but Albion, in the main, managed to contain the threat down the Blackpool right.

Albion were inches away from a second within a couple of minutes of the second half getting under way. An early corner saw Powell land the ball on the head of Sam Hughes and his effort took a vital deflection that helped it elude his teammates and the far post.

Rhodes momentarily had a sight of goal as the hour mark approached but superb defending from Ryan Sweeney ensured that Crocombe’s goal remained unthreatened.

The visitors roused themselves for a serious assault on the Burton goal and both James Husband and skipper Ollie Norburn sent efforts wide from the edge of the area as they pushed for an equaliser.

Albion suffered a blow with the loss of Powell midway through the half. An earlier challenge from Norburn had left his clearly in discomfort and after receiving more treatment he limped from the pitch to be replaced by Rekeem Harper.

Albion needed fresh impetus and a triple change saw Mason Bennett, Jasper Moon and Mustapha Carayol brought on for Baah, Caprice and Kamwa with less than a quarter of an hour remaining.

However it was still the visitors pushing and skipper John Brayford and wing back Steve Seddon made vital blocks inside the penalty area to preserve Albion’s clean sheet.

A latw flurry of corners kept the pressure on the Burton goal but their defensive resilience shone through to secure a vital win.
