BURTON ALBION SIGN EXPERIENCED MIDFIELDER CHRIS MCCANN ON SHORT-TERM CONTRACT

4 February 2023

BURTON Albion Football Club have completed the signing of midfielder Chris McCann on a short-term contract.

An experienced campaigner with more than 450 appearances under his belt, including in the Premier League and Championship, McCann has been training at St George's Park for several weeks with the first team and has now signed up with the Brewers.

McCann has previously played under manager Dino Maamria at Oldham Athletic, making 19 appearances in the 2019/20 campaign before joining Shamrock Rovers and spending two seasons with the reigning League of Ireland champions, for whom he also played in the Champions League and Europa League.

McCann started his career at Burnley after joining the Clarets as a teenager, going on to feature 238 times in the top two flights before moving to Wigan Athletic in 2013.

The Irish midfielder spent three years playing in America with Atlanta United and DC United, with a brief loan spell at Coventry City in 2017, before returning to England with Oldham.

Manager Dino Maamria said: "First and foremost, Chris is a quality player who has been training with us over the last four or five weeks.

"We needed to strengthen that midfield area. I've always said I like experience in the spine of the team and now we've got Craig (MacGillivray) in there, John Brayford in defence and Chris McCann for the middle with Sam Winnall (up front).

"I had Chris at Oldham and he's done brilliantly for me - his pedigree is class and he's played at a high level. He's left-footed as well. We're delighted to have him on board and hopefully he can push us up the table."

McCann said: "I've been training here for a couple of week and got to know the lads well over the period of time I've been here.

"Once my deal ended in Ireland, I came over and asked Dino if he'd be interested in getting me into training just to keep me ticking over.

"Obviously that culminated in him offering me something, which I'm delighted about."

McCann will wear squad number 15 at the Pirelli Stadium and is available for selection for today's game at Fleetwood Town. Welcome, Chris!
