HUGHES | JANUARY SIGNINGS MAKING AN IMPACT FOR BURTON ALBION

27 February 2023

BURTON Albion defender Sam Hughes praised the impact our January signings are having at the Pirelli Stadium following our goalless draw with Accrington Stanley.

In what was an ultimately frustrating afternoon for Albion, who saw one effort cleared off the line and could not find a way past Lukas Jensen in goal, Hughes still believed there were some positives to take from the performance which saw Albion record a third consecutive home clean sheet.

Speaking after the game Hughes said: “It’s probably a good point. We obviously set out to take all three points before the game and we haven’t done that, but we’ve just got to try and take the positives from this and move on.

“It felt like in the game whoever scored first was going to win the game. Overall if you look at the chances, we were probably more likely to do that in terms of positions we got in around the pitch. We obviously had a shot (cleared) off the line and a couple of headers but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.

The goalless draw against Stanley meant Albion have only lost once in their last six league games as Hughes praised the impact the January arrivals are having on the squad.

He added: “I’d say the competition for places is a lot stronger than it was a few months ago, we’ve had some unfortunate injuries with Terry (Taylor) and Sam Winnall, but I think the strength and depth in this squad is by far good enough to see us keep climbing the table.

“The lads who have come in have been great. Jasper Moon especially has been excellent, the same with Zac (Ashworth). Obviously, Sam’s (Lavelle) come in (on Saturday) and he’s a top player.

"He’s played at this level for a long time and obviously knows what he’s doing, and I thought making his home debut he was excellent.

"Sometimes when a lot of players come in it can take two three months before things start to click, but I feel as if we had an impact straight away as soon as some of these boys came in, we started picking up results and if you look at our last five to six games, I think anyone in the league would take our form."

Next up for the Brewers is a tricky trip to Ipswich Town next Saturday but Hughes said the squad remain confident coming into every fixture no matter the opposition.

“We set out to win every game, we know we can beat anyone on any given day," said Hughes.

"I don’t think we’re going to go there and sit back and watch them dictate play and settle for a draw, we’re going to go there to try and win the game.”
