DINO Maamria openly expressed his disappointment at Albion’s heavy New Year’s Day defeat away at Morecambe this afternoon.

An even game turned just after the half hour mark when a loose ball in the box was forced home , Kieran Phillips adjudged to have got the final touch and crucially Albion found themselves two behind on in first half stoppage time, Jenson Weir firing home from distance. Morecambe ramped things up after the break and scored twice in the first ten minutes through substitute Caleb Watts and Phillips with his second of the game. A poor afternoon for the Brewers was capped off when Watts ran through to score his second of the game late on.

“I think we started the game really well. Then Victor came off with an injury, which he took 15 minutes (to get treatment) - that period gave them momentum to go forward. I think that gave them a foothold on the game really. It was a tough decision to make, to decide whether or not I took him off, but I kept him on and I think that is what allowed them into the game.

“Other things also didn’t go our way – there’s a clear penalty at nil-nil and it could end up leading to a different game.

“There was also two goals that were offside - that’s probably where we lost our heads as a team as well and we had a crazy 15 minutes before halftime where we conceded two goals.

“Second half I'm disappointed with our start because the third goal really was to scrap in our penalty box. But overall, this is how highs and lows of football - I think the game came too soon for us as a team.

When referring to the defensive high-line implemented by Albion, Maamria said: “We know it works. As a team we condensed the pitch and it makes us a much better unit.

“Ben (Garratt) has got to do better for a couple of them (the goals). I think it was the second goal where I think he had time to clear it - he miss-cleared it. We all make mistakes and then on one of the other goals he also hesitated a bit. I think it’s new to Ben to play with a higher line and when you play it,  you have to make sure that your goalkeeper is in line with what you are doing if you do that.

“We saw in the last two games though how well we’ve defended and how we’ve defended as a unit, so we don’t need to get carried away after today’s showing.”

“I'm disappointed because today's game was a capable of winning - that's what disappoints me, the manner of how we lost the game.

“Our fans travelled in numbers today - they were brilliant throughout the game, and we let them down big time. That’s what hurts a lot and it's my job to make sure we get it right.

“We've got an FA Cup game next weekend – a massive one at Grimsby. We need those fans to turn up on numbers again and we'll get it right, I'll make sure we get it right.

“We’re in January – in certain areas of the pitch it’s evident that we're crying out to strengthen and we'll do that.”
