BREWERS LOOK TO MAKE MORE FA CUP HISTORY

6 January 2023

BURTON Albion will be looking to make the Fourth Round of the FA Cup for only the second time in the club’s history on Saturday with Grimsby Town standing in the Brewers way.

Eleven years ago, Albion played Burnley away in the Fourth Round and if they want to at least match that performance they will need to get a result at Blundell Park tomorrow (kick off 5.30pm).

Dino Maamria is looking forward to what will be a big game for both clubs with a chance of glory and a money-spinning tie against top opposition as a potential prize.

He said: “This is my first time as a manager in the Third Round and if we go to the Fourth Round it could be even bigger and the opportunities are endless when you get that far in the FA Cup.

“Let’s focus first on the game itself and the opposition. Grimsby are a good, solid team. I have watched their last few games and especially at home they get their fans behind them, and they are quite loud. There’s no doubt that they will make it a tough game.

“We would have liked to have been at home and we know we must play better than we did at Morecambe.

“It will be a tight game and we will have to compete and do the basics well.

“They play some really good football but like a lot of League Two teams they are also strong in the duels and are happy to go behind and their frontline is a handful.  They are a bottom end League One/top end League Two team. Their results have been unfortunate, and their position doesn’t reflect how good they are.”

The Brewers will be without defender Sam Hughes, but his injury is not as bad as first feared.

“Hopefully, he will be back in February so will still have a big part to play,” said Maamria.

Conor Shaughnessy could be back at the same time giving the manager the chance to potentially pair the two in the centre of defence.

Maamria said: “Conor did his first session with the group this week. He’s three or four weeks away. But if we can have him and Sam Hughes available that would be fantastic news for us.”
