ACADEMY REPORT | BURTON ALBION 3-2 SCUNTHORPE UNITED

16 January 2023

BEN Radcliffe was the hero after he bagged a brace including a 90th-minute winner as the young Brewers came from behind to beat Scunthorpe United U18s 3-2.

After a very positive start at St George’s Park Albion took an early lead through Kiyan Baker-McKay, however they were soon pegged back twice before the break thanks to goals from Tyrell Fleming and Harvey Cribb.

For much of the second period it was a frustrating afternoon for Burton until they pulled one goal back thanks to Radcliffe in the 73rd minute.

Things got even better for Radcliffe and the Brewers in the 90th minute when the midfielder scored a sensational scissor-kick to secure back-to-back 3-2 victories for the Brewers.

It was important for the Brewers to get off to a quick start having taken nearly an hour to get going against Stockport in midweek, and thankfully Burton got off to a fine start as they bombarded the Irons goal in the early periods of this game.

Albion’s first chance of the game fell to Dylan Scott in the fifth minute when Ben Maginness clipped in a great ball from the right wing into the box where the young forward met the ball early, but he headed the ball well over the bar.

Burton continued to dominate the early period of this clash as they knocked the ball about wonderfully with Scunthorpe unable to get as much as a touch on the ball in the early stages.

The Brewers again came close to breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute when Scott neatly teed the ball off to Toby Oakes on the edge of the box, only for his low shot to fizz just wide of the post.

Albion finally received their reward for all this dominance in the 16th minute when after a fine passing move Radcliffe slide a sensational ball through to BAKER-MCKAY who remained cool as he placed his shot underneath the keeper to make it 1-0.

Burton arguably got too complacent having gone 1-0 up and took their football off the gas as they ended up conceding a penalty in the 35th minute when Kamil Dudek took out Harry Lewis.

FLEMING stepped up and slide his spot-kick down the middle to make it all square.

Only a minute later Scunthorpe went into the lead after an unmarked CRIBB headed home from a Charlie Burden-Whittleton corner.

Burton started the second period as they ended the first which was in sloppy fashion.

The Irons really should have bagged a third goal of the afternoon in the 54th minute after they broke quickly on the counter before the ball fell to Fleming who was unmarked eight yards out from goal, but Dudek made a sensational save as he got low to deny the forward.

After that missed chance Burton seemed to spark into life again and bombarded the Scunthorpe goal once more.

The Brewers were rewarded for their persistence in the 73rd minute when Drew Robinson provided a perfect delivery into the box from a corner and RADCLIFFE rose the highest as his header cannoned into the bottom corner.

Albion weren’t satisfied with their equaliser and went in search of a match winning goal.

They came close in the 80th minute when Baker-McKay fired in a great cross from the left wing which found Scott who played a clever backheel, but his flick just evaded Radcliffe at the back post.

The Brewers were awarded one final chance in the 90th minute after they won a free kick 40 yards out from goal.

Connor Pace whipped the ball in which was cleared only as far as Finn Delap who headed the ball back into the box where RADCLIFFE scissor-kicked the ball into the back of the net.
