BURTON ALBION SIGN ZAC ASHWORTH ON LOAN FROM WEST BROMWICH ALBION

17 January 2023

BURTON Albion Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of West Bromwich Albion defender Zac Ashworth on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Primarily a left-back who can also play further forward, Ashworth has been with the Baggies' Academy since the age of 10, making his senior debut in West Brom's Emirates FA Cup third round clash with Brighton and Hove Albion last January.

The 20-year-old then made his league bow at the end of last season, playing in back-to-back wins for the Baggies and helping keep clean sheets against Reading and Barnsley at the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

This season, Ashworth has made three further appearances for West Brom's senior side, starting in Carabao Cup games against Sheffield United and Derby County, as well as playing 45 minutes in a 3-3 FA Cup draw with Chesterfield just over a week ago.

Ashworth was a key figure in West Brom U23s' Premier League 2 Cup triumph, netting a brace in a quarter-final against Derby and making his Wales U21 debut in a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in June, playing and training alongside Brewers midfielder Terry Taylor.

The young left-back is excited to make his Brewers bow, having trained with the first team at St George’s Park for the first time this morning.

"As soon as I knew Burton Albion were interested, I was really keen to come and meet the manager and see the facilities and the ground," said Ashworth.

"I was really keen to get it over the line as soon as it became an option. It's been there for a couple of weeks - I had to stay at West Brom and play in the FA Cup, which is completely understandable.

"Now I'm here and I can't wait to get started."

Manager Dino Maamria said: "Zac is a player we've monitored for a while. He can cover the left-back and left-wing back positions.

"He's hungry for first team football. He's played at Championship level and I'm sure he'll add quality to the left-hand side of the pitch for us."

Welcome to Burton Albion, Zac!
