BSC MATCH REPORT: REDDITCH UNITED 2-0 BURTON ALBION

17 January 2023

BURTON Albion bowed out of the Birmingham Senior Cup last night following a 2-0 defeat away at Redditch United.

The Reds secured their passage into the quarter-finals as captain Reece Flanagan bagged two second half penalties against an Albion side that featured several Albion first team players including Ben Garratt, Joe Powell, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Charlie Lakin and Ciaran Gilligan.

Despite dominating the play in the opening 10 minutes, the Brewers were unable to create many, if any, clear-cut opportunities, with the first chance of the night falling to Lakin on 13 minutes. The midfielder intercepted Robbie Bunn’s weak pass in the middle of the park before driving at goal, however he was unable to keep his shot on target as it sailed just wide of the goal from the edge of the area.

Four minutes later Redditch went close after the Brewers failed to clear their lines. Harvey Gregson’s long throw was met by Martin Riley, who proceeded to head the ball back into the danger zone, before Daniel King managed to wiggle in-between Will Tamen and Thierry Latty-Fairweather, firing wide of Ben Garratt’s goal.

Again, the next 20 minutes failed to produce many chances as Albion were unable to open up the stubborn Reds’ defence. Tom Hewlett tried an effort from range after doing well to create an opening, but his shot was off target.

Lakin again proved to be Burton’s brightest spark in the opening half, coming close to breaking the deadlock on 37 minutes when he was played in by Drew Robinson, but a rush of blood lead to him smashing his effort over the bar from just inside the area.

Albion’s final and by far finest chance of the half fell to Davis Keillor-Dunn on 45 minutes. Charlie Williams played a great cross in from the left wing straight onto the penalty spot, but again it was off target as an unmarked Keillor-Dunn flicked his header wide.

HALF-TIME: REDDITCH UNITED 0-0 BURTON ALBION

The first spot kick of the game was awarded on 54 minutes. Robinson was deemed to have bundled into the back of Gregson inside the area to give the home side a penalty. Captain Flanagan stepped up to send Garratt the wrong way, rolling the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Six minutes later disaster struck again, this time as Lakin handled the ball inside the area following Max Sheaf’s free kick. Flanagan calmly stepped up again, this time sending Garratt the other way as he smashed the spot kick into the bottom left-hand corner to make it 2-0.

The two goals seemed to deflate the Brewers who again struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities in the second period.

Joe Powell tried his luck from distance after he worked hard to win the ball on the edge of the area, but the Redditch keeper did well to hold onto the low shot.
