REPORT │ BURTON ALBION 5-1 LICHFIELD CITY - DRINKHALL HITS STUNNING HAT-TRICK

25 January 2023

MILLIE Drinkhall netted a stunning hat-trick as Burton Albion extended their fine unbeaten run in the West Midlands Regional Women's Football League on Sunday.

Midfielder Drinkhall's treble, along with strikes from Alice Lilley and Elisha Gourlay, ensured a fine 5-1 victory at home to Lichfield City.

The Brewers started well, with striker Lilley pulling a long-range effort wide of goal from 20 yards - but it would not be long before the in-form Brewers took the lead.

Right-back Sophie Richards was played in down the flank and played a neat reverse ball to DRINKHALL, who wrapped her right foot around the ball and sent a dipping curled effort over the keeper and in.

And it was 2-0 not long later - Hajrah Mahmood played an inch-perfect through ball between three defenders for DRINKHALL to chase. The midfielder latched onto Mahmood's perfectly-weighted pass and her first touch was a fine right-footed finish to the bottom-left corner.

HALF-TIME: BURTN ALBION 2-0 LICHFIELD CITY

The visitors reduced the arrears shortly after half-time as Shelbie CARTWRIGHT, spotting goalkeeper Alice Langstone off her line, executed a spectacular lob from 30 yards that flew into the back of the net.

Cartwright would then hit the bar from a corner as Lichfield searched for an equaliser - but Albion would heed the warning and come back with a goal of their own, DRINKHALL heading home from close-range from Lilley's in-swinging corner.

Albion were indebted to Langstone from there, who ensured the Brewers retained their lead with a string of superb saves - holding one powerful effort from Courtney Dilger, before pulling off a stunning one-handed stop to turn former Brewer Ella Doocey's free-kick over the bar.

Langstone then got across well to turn over a toe-poked effort from Billie-Jo Kelly, before pulling off another stunning reflex save to deny Doocey. Drinkhall forced a good stop from Emily Jones at the other end before turning provider, playing a superb cross into the box that GOURLAY chested down and finished for 4-1.

There was just time for LILLEY to win possession back in the box from a Lichfield defender and unleash a powerful drive that Jones did well to get a hand to, but could not stop from crossing the line.
