MANAGER'S VERDICT: OXFORD UNITED

28 January 2023

DINO Maamria hailed a “brilliant team performance” as his Burton Albion side recorded a 2-0 win over Oxford United.

A super strike from Zac Ashworth, which went in off the keeper, and a clever flick from Dale Taylor secured the points as Albion’s new faces shone in an important victory.

The Brewers manager said: “Three points; a clean sheet, two goals scored – it was a perfect afternoon.

“We had a lot of new faces in the team but that was exactly what we needed. It takes bottle to play four debutants and so many under 23 players but that’s what we have been working towards over the last week or so. They gave us a lift, energy, endeavour and a relentless work rate. Overall, it was a brilliant team performance.”

Oxford had chances early in the game but Albion held firm and then became dominant.

Maamria said: “We were quite nervous the first ten minutes and Sam Hughes had been out for four weeks and had only trained once which explains our hesitant start. But we weathered that storm, didn’t concede, which was really important, and I knew we would grow into the game.

“We won battles all over the pitch. Our midfield was excellent and our press from the front two. Our back five defended as a unit and our keeper made a couple of brilliant saves in the first few minutes.

“It was an important afternoon for the football club and that has given us a brilliant lift.”

Maamria revealed that Sam Winnall was set to start today but that his wife was having a baby which meant that he turned to Dale Taylor to lead the line and he was rewarded for his performance with a goal.

Maamria said: “Everything was a reset today, with a whole new team. I’m sure that confused Oxford as well. But we needed to inject the team with new energy and we are still looking to do that over the next couple of days.

“I have unwavering belief we will turn our fortunes around. Now the key thing is can we go again? We have Fleetwood next week and we need to use this performance and go on a good run now.”
