BURTON ALBION REFUGEE TEAM WINS WORLD CUP

16 June 2023

A TEAM representing Burton Albion recently won the refugee World Cup competition.

Staged at Keele University in Staffordshire, the competition featured teams from Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire, with the aim of breaking down barriers and improving integration. 16 teams were involved in what was the second time the World Cup has taken place.

Through the local Primary Care Network (PCN) which covers East Staffordshire and the Mercian areas, four sides representing Burton Albion Community Trust (BACT) and Tamworth attended the event. Burton Albion’s first team scooped the overall prize whilst the second team finished third, with Tamworth’s team’s finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

“It’s been a very well organised and we are very grateful for the invitation. The players absolutely loved it and winning the tournament is a bonus too" said Roy Burton, BACT’s Care Coordinator.

“It’s brilliant for Burton Albion and the Community Trust to support these events and we look forward to the next one. Special thanks to Hayley and Jess for co-ordinating this on behalf of the PCN."
