BREWERS SIGN MAX CROCOMBE

30 June 2023

BURTON Albion can confirm the signing of goalkeeper Max Crocombe on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Grimsby Town.

New Zealand international Crocombe began his career at Buckingham Town before being spotted by scouts at Oxford United and signed his first professional deal in 2012. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against the Brewers in January 2013.

His six years with the U’s included loan spells at Banbury United, Nuneaton Town, Barnet and Southport.

Crocombe made a permanent switch to Carlisle United in 2016 before heading to Salford City, helping the Ammies earn promotion to the football league in 2019. After departing the Peninsula Stadium he ventured closer to home, spending a season with the Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory.

He returned to England for the 21/22 season with Grimsby Town and claimed an assist in the National league play-off final against Notts County before being a solid presence during the final and helping the Mariners to return to the Football League.

Crocombe has represented his country three times at senior level.

Burton Albion manager Dino Maamria said: “I’ve worked with Max before when I was at Southport when he was a young goalie. He showed a huge potential back then and he’s gone on to be an international goalkeeper.

“He’s a great character. I think he fits in really well with what we’re trying to do as a football club.

On signing, Crocombe said: “I’m delighted to be here. I’ve worked with Dino Maamria before so that was a big factor knowing how he wants to work.

"We had a good amount of success when we worked together so I’m really excited to be here. You can tell there’s a lot of really good people at this football club and you can tell that’s the heart and soul of the football club.

"The last couple of years have gone really well for me and each year has just been a progression from National League to League Two and now League One.

"I’m excited to get going and prove my worth to the team!”
