MANAGER'S VERDICT: PORT VALE

18 March 2023

DINO Maamria says the Brewers came with a determination to win at Vale Park and were rewarded with a 3-2 victory over Port Vale.

Despite going behind after less than two minutes Albion took the game to the home side and a brace from Dale Taylor and a penalty from Jonny Smith secured a big win in front of more than 600 travellling fans.

Maamria was delighted with the way his team played.

He said: “That’s especially true when you consider how young our team is, with three Academy graduates on the bench. We were terrific today in a derby game, when you see the state of the pitch, which is worse than ours.

“To win these games you have to compete, scrap, show fighting spirit and defend as a team. We came with an intent to win the game, we picked an attacking team and our game plan worked.

“I thought Jonny Smith and Charlie Kirk were brilliant and in transition we hurt them all the time and we were disappointed we didn’t score more goals and we should have had another penalty.

“We knew this was a big game for us and our fans. We have seen Port Vale come to the Pirelli twice and beat us and celebrate with their fans and that hurt me personally and I reminded our players about that and what it means to our fans. We didn’t come to defend we came to win the game.”

The manager was unhappy with the way his team went behind early but praised the response.

He said: “It was really poor from kick off and that was our youngest players not quite finding their feet. But the team stayed resilient, stayed focus and if you look at games like Bristol Rovers and Forest Green away, we won them in the second half and that’s because we stayed in the game and then kicked on.”

Albion also resisted a late rally from Port Vale who threw on attacking substitutes to try and salvage a point.

Maamria said: “I have to mention Sam Hughes and John Brayford as well as they were outstanding out there.”
