GILROY PREVIEWS TONIGHT'S FA YOUTH CUP TIE AT PIRELLI STADIUM

22 November 2023

BURTON Albion's PDP side take on Chester-Le-Street United in the FA Youth Cup second round this evening and Lead Coach Keith Gilroy believes that the euphoria of the last round can help to spur on his side in tonight's fixture.

Fans can watch tonight’s 7pm kick off at the Pirelli Stadium for just £5 for adults and £1 for under 17’s.

“I think if you progress in any FA Youth Cup game and get that feeling of winning in a stadium in front of fans and your family, it certainly spurs the lads on. We’re grateful to everyone who showed their support in the last round and hopefully they all come again because the atmosphere definitely helps the lads.

“What you've got to be careful of is complacency -  So the last few weeks have been about keeping standards high, and to be fair to the lads they’ve trained well.

“They’ve done very well to get to this stage and the message now is to make sure that they match the intensity of the last game and to make sure that they enjoy the experience again without looking too far into the future.

“We’re always confident in the boys and they’ve had a great season so far. Our consistent message to them is that their technique and tactics are always secondary to doing the basics well in football. That means matching the intensity of the opposition, outworking them, outrunning them. Statistics show that when we’ve done that we’ve done well, and when we haven’t done that we haven’t done well.

“The Hartlepool game is the only game that we’ve had since the Port Vale win in the last round, losing 5-4, which probably tells its own story. We felt we were good in possession, but not out of possession, so we need to make sure that we’re not easy to play through again because we know that we are coming up against tough opposition in Chester-Le-Street.

The winner of tonight’s tie will face a home tie against Aston Villa.
