ACADEMY REPORT: BURTON ALBION 2-0 CHESTER-LE-STREET UNITED

22 November 2023

BURTON Albion’s PDP side progressed through to the third round of the FA Youth Cup after a convincing 2-0 victory over Chester-Le-Street United.

First half goals from Cameron Gilbert and Ronny Wakelin secured the victory for Albion, which will now see the visit of Aston Villa to the Pirelli Stadium in the next round.

The young Brewers took an early lead through GILBERT on 8 minutes, when the defender rose highest to head home from a corner by Connor Pace.

Shortly after the second goal Pace picked up the ball in midfield before hitting an effort towards the top corner that looked set for a third, but the effort was stopped by a strong hand from James Hughes in the Chester-Le-Street goal.

WAKELIN doubled the lead with Albion’s second meaningful chance of the game on 30 minutes. Kamil Dudek's long pass found Dylan Scott before he teed up Wakelin on the edge of the area – the midfielder then made no mistake with his side-footed shot into the far corner.

The final chance of the first half came through Charlie Knowles. The full-back received the ball wide on the left before cutting inside releasing a powerful effort across goal that flew wide of the far post.

HALF TIME: BURTON ALBION 2-0 CHESTER-LE-STREET UNITED

After a quiet start to the second half, Scott was eventually able to test away keeper Hughes again. His shot from just outside the box was saved towards the bottom left corner before going out for a throw-in.

Captain Will Tamen had the next chance, rising highest to win a header at the back post following a corner, but his effort was just wide of the near post.

The Brewers continued to threaten for the rest of the half, as this time Pace and Taroni linked up well on the left wing before the latter broke away and found Scott whose shot was blocked by the visitors back-line.

There was one last chance for Albion as Taroni forced Hughes to make a good save with his feet late on.

The two first half goals and a good performance sealed another victory for the young Brewers at the Pirelli Stadium, meaning that they will now face Aston Villa in the third round.
