MANAGER'S VERDICT: BRISTOL ROVERS

21 October 2023

DINO Maamria hailed a “huge win” for his Brewers team after they came from behind to record a 4-1 victory over Bristol Rovers.

That made it eight games unbeaten for Albion after recording a fourth win in succession.

The Albion manager said: “It’s true what they say that the more wins you have the tougher it gets. The scoreline is 4-1 but it was a tough win and we weren’t at our best. That just shows the growth in the team over the last few weeks. We have had a huge result but on the back of a performance that’s not as good as they have been. We got a win at 60-70 percent of our best and we can go forward with that.”

It was a difficult couple of days for the Brewers squad with the atrocious weather hampering training and Sam Hughes suffering an injury that ruled him out of today’s game.

Maamria said: “We didn’t train yesterday as everywhere was waterlogged. Then we lost Sam at the last minute through a calf injury. Jasper Moon came in, but he has not played or trained for a long time. We had no other centre backs available, but he declared himself fit and he gave a huge performance today.

“Our preparation couldn’t be as good as it normally is and that reflected on our start. We conceded that first goal when we were too open, and they scored with ease. But we showed that resilience and mental toughness to come back and win the game 4-1.

“We were very clinical today and the chances we had, we put them away. That’s what we want to see. You can’t play well every week but if you keep winning games when you aren’t at your best that’s a good sign.

“Everybody did a brilliant job to get the game on today, the volunteers and the grounds staff and what was pleasing was that there were more people here  today and the fans responded to the team. It has been a good day for Burton Albion.

“We need more people coming here and backing the football club because we need them if we are going to compete seriously at League One level. We need them with us.”

The Brewers travel to Carlisle on Tuesday night but will be without the injured Hughes.

Maamria said: “It will probably be 10 days to two weeks for Sam hopefully if everything goes well. But we always take it one game at a time. We never look back or sit on our laurels, we just move forward. Carlisle is a long journey, a big pitch and we need to be mentally and physically ready.”
