TONY'S TRIVIA: CARLISLE UNITED

23 October 2023

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s away game at Carlisle United from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY – OCTOBER 24

The last occasion that the Brewers played on October 24 was in 2020 when AFC Wimbledon visited the Pirelli for a League One game. There were no fans present as Ryan Longman gave the Wombles a 65th minute lead, which was quickly cancelled out less than a minute later by Kane Hemmings to earn Jake Buxton’s side a point from the 1-1 draw.

It was a League One game on this date in 2015 when Port Vale visited the Pirelli. A crowd of 4,076 saw the visitors reduced to 10 men after just 26 minutes, when Uche Ikpeazu swiftly picked up two yellow cards, the second for simulation. The game was still goalless in the 80th minute when it became 10 a side, as Robbie Weir was sent off for the Brewers. Four minutes later Tom Naylor put Albion ahead, before Nasser El Khayati confirmed the win by scoring a second goal in the 90th minute to keep Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink’s side in third position.

Saturday, October 24, 2009 saw the Brewers travel to Saltergate for a League Two game against Chesterfield in their inaugural Football League season. Danny Hall put Chesterfield ahead in the 13th minute, before Mark Allott made it 2-0 in the 24th. Aaron Webster pulled a goal back in the 79th minute, before Jack Lester in the 81st and Drew Talbot in the 89th increased the home side’s lead. Donal McDermott scored a fifth in the 90th minute, before Shaun Harrad completed the scoring making it 5-2 in front of 4,218 fans.

It was a Southern League Premier derby game against then local rivals Tamworth on Tuesday,  October 24 2000. There were 1,102 fans inside Eton Park as two goals from Phil Starbuck and one from Darren Stride earned Albion a 3-1 win.

Saturday, October 24 1998 was a very significant date in Burton Albion’s history. It was the date that Nigel Clough took charge of his first ever match as manager. Grantham Town were the visitors to Eton Park for an FA Trophy First Round tie. A crowd of 513 saw a goalless draw, with the Brewers winning the replay the following Tuesday, courtesy of two goals from Darren Grocutt and one from Mark Blount.

CARLISLE UNITED

The last time Albion visited Brunton Park was on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 for a League Two game. Gary Rowett was in the Brewers dugout for a game memorable for the quality of the goals. A crowd of 4,266 saw Damien McCrory give Albion a fifth minute lead firing home a first-time effort from 25 yards. Kyle Dempsey equalised for the home side 7 minutes later, following a close-range scramble. In the 27th minute Lee Bell picked the ball up just inside his own half, and was allowed to advance unchallenged, before firing into the top corner from 25 yards to restore the lead. Five minutes before the interval Stuart Beavon advanced and played in Jacob Blyth who fired home first time from 16 yards. In the 45th minute Alex MacDonald got to the byline and fired home from a tight angle to make in 4-1. Yet there was still time for Brad Potts to make it 4-2 at the interval and he too fired into the top corner of Jon McLaughlin’s net for the third 25-yard goal of the half! Carlisle made it 3-4 in the 65th minute when Derek Asamoah took advantage of hesitation between McLaughlin and Phil Edwards to nip in and slot home. There were no further goals, but Beavon was sent off for a second yellow card in the 90th minute.

The only other time that Burton have played at Carlisle was a Nationwide Conference game on Saturday, September 4, 2004. Paul Simpson was managing the Cumbrians then too for a game which had a lunchtime kick-off as it was being televised. The match saw goalkeeper Dan Crane make his Burton debut, together with a makeshift central defensive pairing of Aaron Webster and Ryan Webster because of injury. Albion held their high-flying hosts to a goalless draw in front of 4,582 fans.
