MANAGER'S VERDICT: BARNSLEY (A)

16 September 2023

BREWERS manager Dino Maamria says his team must improve in the final third of the pitch after today's 2-0 defeat away to promotion-chasing Barnsley.

“Overall I thought that we started the game bright and in the first half there wasn’t much in it between the teams. The first time they got into our half they showed the quality that they’ve got and sometimes there isn’t a lot you can do about that.

“I thought that our play from the goalkeeper to the last 30-yards was very good and we know that’s the problem, we need to be better in the final third of the pitch and in those final areas” he said.

Despite the international break, the Brewers are still missing some key players especially in forward areas which Maamria highlights as a key to the lack of goals at this stage.

Maamria said: “Our front-line has not been fit everybody knows that, Cole Stockton and Mason Bennett have been out for a while, Josh Walker has just come back and Josh Gordon has been in-and-out out the squad.

“It was good to see Lubala have a good full debut, I thought Baah came on and was really bright so despite the result, there are some positives, we can see signs that when we get some players back we’ll see a different team and the goals will come for sure.”

Maamria is hoping to put the loss behind him as the Brewers play again on Tuesday night away to an in-form Port Vale.

“In football you can never be too high or too low as there’s always the next game and we’ve got a quick turn-around with Port Vale on Tuesday, hopefully we can put ourselves together and put a good performance in on Tuesday.”
