MANAGER'S VERDICT: EVERTON

26 September 2023

DINO Maamria praised “a very good performance” from his Burton Albion side as they overcame Everton Under 21s in the EFL Trophy.

Two goals in the first 20 minutes from Mason Bennett, on his return from injury, and Deji Oshilaja secured a 2-0 victory for the Brewers in our opening group game in the competition.

The Albion manager said: “We played some really good football, especially in the first half, and I thought we were terrific tonight. We made changes in the second half that affected the flow of the game but we scored two very good goals, could have scored more and got a solid clean sheet. Winning is a habit and it’s good to get that win at home and Will Tamen made his debut as well, so a good night all round for the football club.

“It’s good to get another player through our Academy and you saw tonight how Will came on and was confident on the ball and strong defensively. I was desperate to put him on the pitch, and I was glad he could make his debut and we got a clean sheet as well.”

That made it three games unbeaten for the Brewers after a win at Port Vale last week and a draw at home to Fleetwood on Saturday

Maamria said: “We always look at where we can improve and we had a video meeting yesterday and discussed with the players how we can do better going forward, make things happen in that attacking third. We did that really well tonight and the only thing was that we should have scored more.

“We wanted to keep that cohesion and keep the back four together, the midfield three and that was the foundation for a good performance tonight and a brilliant result.

“Jamal (Blackman) was back in goal after he got injured at Shrewsbury but Max (Crocombe) came in and has done brilliantly. It was an opportunity to give Max a rest tonight and Jamal made a brilliant save in the first half when he was called upon and it’s good to have two brilliant keepers at the club.

“Mason Bennett scored our first and he has worked really hard to get back fit and the plan was always to play him 45-60 minutes tonight and hopefully he is another one now who is ready for Saturday.”
