ON THIS DAY – APRIL 16

The last time that Burton Albion played a Football League game on April 16 was in 2016.  A crowd of 4,858 fans were present as Albion hosted Barnsley with both sides chasing promotion. The Tykes boasted a front two of Sam Winnall and Ivan Toney, yet the game finished goalless. Both teams would earn promotion to the Championship in May, the Brewers finishing Runners Up to Wigan Athletic, and Barnsley winning the Play Off final.

In 2011 the Brewers hosted Cheltenham Town on this date. Cheltenham conceded a penalty and saw Andy Gallinagh sent off in the 30th minute. Greg Pearson put away the spot kick, before Jacques Maghoma secured all three points with a second goal in the 79th minute, in front of 2,444 fans.

It was a Nationwide Conference fixture on Saturday April 16, 2005, as Carlisle United were the visitors. The Cumbrians were looking to return to the Football League at the first attempt, having been relegated to the Conference the previous summer. Current United manager Paul Simpson was in charge of the visitors that day as a crowd of 1,914 were gathered inside Eton Park. Derek Holmes scored the only goal of the game in the 28th minute to earn all three points for the visitors.

Albion made a short trip to Stafford Rangers for a Southern Premier League fixture in 2001. A crowd of 1,674 saw goals from Phil Starbuck and Ryan Sugden earn Nigel Clough’s side a 2-0 win.

It was another local derby in 1996. A Southern Premier League trip to Ilkeston Town ended in a 1-0 defeat, in front of 692 fans.

CHELTENHAM TOWN

The last time Burton Albion hosted Cheltenham Town was on Saturday, October 22, 2022. A crowd of 2,269 saw Davis Keillor-Dunn spurn the chance to give Albion a first half lead, when he had a penalty kick saved. The only goal of the game came in the 77th minute when Jonny Smith delivered a low cross which Victor Adeboyejo turned home.

It was early in the 2021/22 season when the sides met here on Friday, August 27, 2021. Callum Wright gave Cheltenham a 28th minute lead, before Lucas Akins earned a share of the points equalising in the 67th minute in front of 2,909 fans.

The last meeting at Burton in League Two came on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Stuart Beavon’s 34th minute goal earned the Brewers all three points in front of 2,225 fans, as Gary Rowett’s side made it five straight home league wins.

All the goals came in the second half when the sides met on Saturday, January 11, 2014. A crowd of 2,510 saw Byron Harrison put Cheltenham ahead in the 62nd minute. Gary Rowett introduced Dominic Knowles as a 69th minute substitute and he was quickly rewarded as the striker scored in both the 72nd and 85th minute to earn his side a 2-1 win.

Byron Harrison also scored when the two sides met at the Pirelli on Saturday, March 9, 2013. Alex MacDonald gave Albion a 22nd minute lead, before Robbie Weir made it 2-0 four minutes later. Weir netted his second and his side’s third in the 48th minute, before Harrison scored a 90th minute consolation in front of 2,680 fans.
