TONY'S TRIVIA: LEYTON ORIENT

16 February 2024

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s away game at Leyton Orient from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY – FEBRUARY 17

Burton Albion have only played once before on February 17t in the Football League. That was in 2018 when Nottingham Forest visited the Pirelli Stadium for a Championship fixture. A large crowd of 5,775 were present as the Brewers were given a boost when Forest were reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute, when Eric Lichaj was sent off. Unfortunately, the Brewers were unable to capitalise on the man advantage, and the match finished as a goalless draw. That result stretched Albion’s winless run to 12 home matches.

Before that it was a Conference fixture on Saturday, February 17, 2007, when Dagenham & Redbridge visited the Pirelli Stadium. A crowd of 1,809 saw a young Michael Oliver oversee a 2-0 win to the visitors, with Sam Sloma scoring in the 18th and 86th minute.

Saturday, February 17, 2001 saw the Brewers travel to Kent to face Welling United in the Southern Premier League. Goals from Aaron Webster and Darren Stride earned Nigel Clough’s side a 2-1 win. That season Stride went on to score 19 goals for his side.

In 1997 Albion hosted Coventry City on Monday, February 17, in a Birmingham Senior Cup Quarter Final tie. Martin Devaney scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory, played in front of 208 fans.

It was a defeat on Saturday, February 17, 1996 away at Salisbury City in the Southern Premier League. The home side won 2-0 in front of 376 fans.

LEYTON ORIENT

This will be the Brewers first ever visit to Leyton Orient. The sides met for the very first time back on Saturday, October 28, 2023, when they fought out a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

Orient are the 85th different side that the Brewers have faced in the Football League.

Prior to this season the closest the two sides have come to each other was in May 2014 at Wembley Stadium. On Sunday, May 25 Orient faced Rotherham United in the League One Play Off final. The match finished 2-2, with Rotherham winning a penalty shoot-out. The following day The Brewers lost the League Two Play Off final in the same venue, losing 0-1 to Fleetwood Town.

In May 2015 the two sides swapped places, as Albion won the League Two title and Orient suffered relegation to League Two.
