MARTIN Paterson was disappointed that his team could not capitalise on a good start as a deflected shot from Northampton turned the game in their favour.

Albion ultimately lost the game 2-0 as they failed to find a way through the visitors' defence.

The Brewers manager said: “Northampton are a team who have gone about their season really well – a good team. But you look at the first 15 minutes of the game in terms of territory and putting the opposition under pressure and I thought that it was just a matter of time before we scored.

“You look at the number of shots we had compared with them but the important thing is to score. We have to be honest when we debrief on Monday and say we haven’t had a clear cut chance.

“We started the game ever so well, but it’s professional football and if you start the game with that kind of momentum you have to score. Otherwise, you leave yourself open to lady luck and when they hit one from 30 yards it has a wicked deflection and our goalkeeper is at the front post and goes into the back.

“Then you have to regroup but a team like Northampton, given a lead, are really well structured and make it really hard to break them down.

“We then came unstuck a little bit by being in two minds about what we were doing and I wanted them to continue the front foot pressure.

“The second goal, we are the architects of our own downfall. We win the ball back and pass the ball to their forward in the middle of the goal. He hits it and it’s a great finish.

“Now you are at home and have to face a really rigid defence.

“We started well today but we ran out of ideas and for me it’s about sticking to processes and the information we give them. I tried to put on as many attacking players as I could to create moments. We needed to continue to load the ball into the box and put them under pressure but at times we chose the wrong options.

“Key decision-making when we are under pressure is the next step for us as well.”
