TONY'S TRIVIA: CARLISLE UNITED

26 February 2024

FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s home game against Carlisle United from Tony Bentley.

ON THIS DAY – FEBRUARY 27

The last time that Burton Albion played a Football League game on  February 27 was in 2021 during the Covid hit season. It was an away trip to a Rochdale side that contained Conor Shaughnessy in their defence. The Brewers won the match with second half goals from Kane Hemmings in the 65th minute and Lucas Akins in the 86th minute, to complete a fourth successive away win for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side.

In 2019 Walsall were the visitors to the Pirelli Stadium for a League One encounter. A crowd of 2,924 saw a goalless draw with the Saddlers side containing Josh Gordon and Zeli Ismail in their starting eleven.

In the Brewers inaugural Football League season, they hosted Rotherham United on Saturday, February 27, 2010. The visitors centre halves that day were future Albion captain Ian Sharps and long-time physiotherapist Nick Fenton. A crowd of 3,568 saw Adam Le Fondre score the only goal of the game, in the 52nd minute, to earn all three points for the visitors.

Tuesday, February 27, 1996 saw Dorchester Town make the long midweek trip to Eton Park for a Southern League Premier game. Darren Stride scored the only goal of the game to earn his side all three points, in front of 458 fans.

CARLISLE UNITED

Albion were still chasing promotion from League Two back in 2015, when Carlisle United made their only previous Football League visit to the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday, April 15.  The struggling visitors took a shock second minute lead through a Danny Grainger free kick, and despite the Brewers having almost non-stop pressure the visitors looked to be on course for a shock win. However deep into stoppage time, with the clock showing 97 minutes and 51 seconds, Denny Johnstone scored an equaliser to send the majority of the 3,892 fans home happier than they might have been.

The only other occasion that Carlisle United had played in Burton was on Saturday, April 16 2005. The Cumbrians were looking to return to the Football League at the first attempt, having being relegated to the Conference the previous summer. Current United manager Paul Simpson was in charge of the visitors that day as a crowd of 1,914 were gathered inside Eton Park. Derek Holmes scored the only goal of the game in the 28th minute to earn all three points for the visitors. In the Carlisle side that day was former Crystal Palace, Brighton and England striker Glenn Murray. At the end of the season Carlisle beat Stevenage 1-0 in the Conference Play Off final at Stoke City to return to the Football League.
