FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s home game against Wycombe Wanderers from Tony Bentley

This will be only the second time that Burton Albion have played a Football League game on January 6. The only other time came on Friday, January 6 2012 when Accrington Stanley visited the Pirelli Stadium for a League Two fixture. A crowd of 2,486 saw the visitors earn a 2-0 win courtesy of a Kevin McIntyre 31st minute goal, and an own goal by Ryan Austin in the 65th minute.

Before then we have to go back to Saturday, January 6 2001 for a Southern League Premier game at Eton Park. Newport County were the visitors, as a crowd of 1,266 saw a Christian Moore penalty and a Darren Stride goal earn a 2-1 win.

January 6 1996 saw a Jason Rhodes penalty earn a 1-1 draw away at Crawley Town in the Southern League Premier in front of 657 fans.

It was a trip to Kent on January 6 1990 for a Beazer Home Premier game against Ashford Town. A crowd of 410 saw a 1-1 draw with Alan McLaren scoring for the Brewers.

It was a local derby on January 6 1988 when the Brewers made the short trip to Shepshed Charterhouse in the Beazer Homes Premier division. A crowd of 350 saw Steve Cotterill score for the Brewers in a 1-1 draw.

The last time Wycombe Wanderers visited the Pirelli Stadium was on Saturday, March 11, 2023. Current Wycombe player Dale Taylor opened the scoring for the Brewers in the 10th minute, when he collected a Josh Walker head on before finishing. Joe Powell made it 2-0 in the 18th minute, when he collected the ball 20 yards out. He looked up and then curled a shot into the top corner. Burton were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half time when Deji Oshilaja committed a two-footed challenge. The Brewers maintained their advantage though as Joe Jacobson fired a second half penalty over the bar, before Tjay De Barr did pull a goal back in the 85th minute, heading home a corner. But it was the majority of the 3,965 fans who could celebrate a 2-1 Burton win.

Saturday, April 30 2022 saw the final game of the season, with Wycombe needing a win to ensure they earned a play off spot. A crowd of 4,440 saw Sam Vokes put the visitors ahead in the 43rd minute, heading home a Joe Jacobson corner. The Brewers equalised in the 72nd minute when Gassan Ahadme played the ball to Joe Powell and advanced to turn home his low cross. The visitors scored the winner in the 85th minute when Jordan Obita turned in Dave Wheeler’s pull back to earn all three points.

It was a Boxing Day game against Wycombe in 2018. A Jake Buxton own goal after 27 minutes gave the visitors the lead, before two quick-fire goals gave Albion a 3-1 half time lead. Lucas Akins after 34 minutes and David Templeton a minute later, were followed by a second for Akins in the 45th minute. The second half was goalless as the majority of the 3,679 crowd went home happy with the three points.

The two sides met in League Two on Monday, April 6, 2015. A crowd of 4,284 saw Adam McGurk score the only goal of the game in the 55th minute as the Brewers powered their way to the League Two title.

The first Football League meeting in Burton between the two sides was on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. A crowd of 2,202 saw Jacques Maghoma score in the 49th and 68th minute to earn a 2-0 win.
